History of the house

Original owners

The original house (shown above) was owned by Dr. W.C. Curtis.  It's believed to have been built in the early to mid-1800s. This grand two-story building once faced the Ft Johnston across what is now Moore Street. By the early 1930s, however, the house had fallen into disrepair and was demolished.

The new owners of the property, Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Plexco, began building the current house in the mid 1930s.  When the neighboring house on the right burned down, the two properties were combined. This allowed for the expansion of the current house, which included a new kitchen, a larger driveway, and a merged backyard that connected to an existing carriage house.

The New Innkeepers

Amy and John currently own The Carriage House Inn, a property they acquired in 2024.

Amy grew up on Oak Island  while John hails from Rochester, NY.
This background inspired the names of their rooms: The Yaupon Room, after Yaupon Beach on Oak Island, and The New York Room.

John is an Army veteran who enlisted after high school and served for 14 years in the infantry, including active duty and time with the NC and SC National Guard. His service took him to Panama and he was part of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. He participated in Operation Just Cause and Desert Storm. After his military career, John earned his degree from the University of South Carolina – Coastal and later obtained his master's degree at NC State University.

Amy  would bring John to the area often  to see family  but  finding a  place that would allow pets was  difficult.  and both wanted to move down.   When they  found this home for sale, it was in need of some TLC but was the perfect place to start an inn and  had enough room to  share Southport with new friends, including furry friends., so they dedided to open a Bed and Breakfast.
